If anyone has actually been in my closet, they will know that I don’t even wear half of what is in there because I’m always reaching for my staple pieces. It’s mostly a mix of minimalistic neutral tops, white t-shirts, jeans, and a few statement pieces to elevate my outfits. And some will say that it’s filled with too many black pieces, but I’d argue that there is nothing chicer than black, the color palette of every Parisian girl’s closet.
Although my closet doesn’t carry all the colors of the rainbow, I find that it encapsulates who I am, who I’d like to be, and a lot of pieces that represent who I used to be (mostly because I haven’t cleaned out my closet in a while). A closet carries all kinds of versions of oneself, that one ugly comfortable t-shirt you can’t get rid of, that one outfit that makes you feel confident, or that one top you still don’t know why you ever bought it. Although a lot of my closet consists of different versions of the same t-shirts, jeans and the occasional top from the different eras of my life, these are the pieces building up what I’d call my “capsule closet”.
I’ve been debating whether I should be using the word “capsule closet” as it’s beginning to feel oversaturated by the thousands of Tik Tok’s on building your perfect wardrobe. Now, I’ll be honest, I do still watch the entire Tik Tok, but I like to think of my “capsule closet” as simply my style decorated with statement pieces.
Some of my favorite statement pieces hold a special place in my heart, not necessarily because they are different from my ordinary wardrobe, but rather because of the memories associated with them. My beige Courrèges vinyl jacket is a favorite of mine during the spring and summer season, perfect with any loose jeans and a white t-shirt. I had been pining over the iconic black and white Courrèges jacket for quite some time and decided to make the splurge. On my 23rd birthday I walked into their Le Marais boutique to find their newest color coming out of the shipment boxes. I think I spent an hour in the store debating whether I get another black jacket or step out of my comfort zone and get the new ecru color for the upcoming season. At your biggest surprise, I ended up going for the beige color.
I’ve always had a hard time getting out of my comfort zone when it comes to outfits, but I find that once I lean into it, I end up loving it. Whenever i’m feeling uninspired or wanting to craft a new outfit, I turn to my friends for inspiration, the endless scroll on Pinterest and the infinite girl crushes I have in the streets. I have many girl crushes, icons like Jane Birkin, Alexa Chung, Courtney Grow or Camille Charrière, but I think my real girl crushes are the people that surround me. Whether it’s my best friends sending me their outfits of the day or admiring girls on the metro on the way to work, these are the people that end up inspiring me the most. Now, this doesn’t change the fact that fashion icons like Jane or Carolyn Besset don’t inspire me on a daily basis, but at the end of the day, my “capsule closet” is constantly being inspired by those closest to me, the city that lives for all black outfits and statement pieces.
