For some girls it may be a shoe addiction, and for others it may be jewelry. But for me, its most definitely bags. I could never have enough bags. I don’t even dare to count how many bags I own; all I know is that I love each and every one of them. The perfect baguette for a night out, the bags that you wear so often they become a part of your wardrobe, a statement bag to elevate your outfits or that one bag you will always love because of the story behind it. They are each just as special as the next.
Bags can mean a lot more than clothes. They are often a small accessory, although now they are trending to be quite big, can become the ‘main character’ of the outfit. But more than that, bags represent an identity. In our society today, bags represent a social status or even historical cultural moment. Whether it be a Birkin representing a certain type of wealth and elitism hanging on your arm, or Jackie Kennedy inspiring the Gucci Jackie and Princess Diana becoming the icon behind the Lady Dior. The brand you choose, down to the style you pick, shows the world a piece of yourself.
I’m often wearing neutral pieces forcing me to accessorize my outfits with my favorite item: handbags. And to be frank with you, most of the time I rely on my handbag to make my outfit. Most days I will base an outfit around which handbag I’m in the mood to wear. Now you must be thinking how many bags do I have? I won’t be counting, but all I know is that it’s too many for my closet. During the week, I’m typically reaching for my simple black on black YSL Nikki Wallet bag, the first luxury bag I ever got. However, on days where I’m carrying my laptop or going to Pilates after work, I’m reaching for my Dragon Diffusion in the color of the year: chocolate brown. I was on the hunt for this specific interwoven tote bag for months as a birthday present to myself, but it was sold out everywhere. I spent my lunches going to the Galeries Lafayette to check in to see if maybe they had received a new shipment. After the summer passed and still no luck, I had lost all hope on finding the bag until my boyfriend dragged me to La Samaritaine on a random sunny October. As I walked in, I spotted the bag, and of course it was the last one in stock, so naturally, I bought it right away.
Whether it’s my Isabel Marant burgundy clutch or Jerome Dreyfuss leopard suede bag or even my cranberry Jodie Bottega, they each have become integral pieces to my everyday wardrobe and style. Although they individually have their unique style, I can rely on them to add a pop of color, texture or print to my neutral outfits. And funny enough, they were each great steals from private sales.
I would consider myself as a girl with a bag for every occasion: for a party night out, I’ll go for my mini Jerome Dreyfuss sparkly bag or of course my Bottega for some color. On a big travel day, I love to stuff my Jerome Dreyfuss Leon canvas bag with way too many things. If I’m off to a beachy destination, I love my Dragon Diffusion, Solé summer bag from Polène or the netted Longchamp to carry just the essentials. Anyways, I could go on and on about my handbags and now, I’m on the hunt for my next spring-summer handbag. Of course, I already have a favorite that I’ve been eyeing for quite some time now but I will keep that story for next time….
P.S. my next handbag may be hidden somewhere in the header
